Arunachal Education: IIT Guwahati, IIT-JEE - a glimpse, Dorjee Khandu Thungon

IITs are unquestionably the most reputed Engineering Institutes in the country. It is well respected outside the country too. I remember watching a documentary on IITs on the BBC regarding the impact that IITs had made globally.

In this blog, Dorjee K Thungon discusses in brief the IIT-JEE and life in the IITs, why is it worthwhile to aspire for the IITs. After passing out of Ramakrishna Mission School Narottam Nagar, he joined IIT-Guwahati. He is currently based out of Chennai working as a software Engineer. It was very kind of him to have responded to the blog.

            Q. When did you pass out of IIT Guwahati?
Dorjee:  I am class of 2005, which tells the year I actually passed out of IIT.

Q. Which stream did you chose?
Dorjee: I did my B-Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering

Q. How was your overall experience in IIT Guwahati?
Dorjee: The overall experience in IIT was fulfilling. It was indeed a well packaged experience with all the ingredients that you can expect from an institute. From grilling exams, lab sessions, surprise tests, organising technical festivals, cultural festivals, Inter IIT meets etc. Study of-course was the main focus but at the same time one could delve into many other co-curricular activities which makes experience in IITs a really good one. I had lots of fun.

Q. Which company are you working for now?
Dorjee: Currently I am working for Standard Microsystem (http://www.smsc.com/) at Chennai office as Software Engineer. It is a semiconductor company  with Corporate Headquarters at New York. My area of work involves development of firmware for the chipset that we are developing, so it involves pre-silicon to post silicon work.

Q. Sounds interesting.
Dorjee: Yeah....it is exciting.

Q. Would you agree if I said that going to a place like IIT gave you an exposure which is more than just studies?
Dorjee: Absolutely, we all are aware that these are the best institutes. IITs  not only give focus on the studies but for all round development. The good thing about the IIT is the facility, you the access to chase your dreams. You get the best of the infrastructure, you have erudite professors and very talented bunch of friends. All of these together gives you such an exposure which is really worthwhile.

Q. Do you feel that you have an edge over your co-workers because of your IIT tag?
Dorjee: The brand value can work for you during the initial phase of job hunt. Yes it is true it helps you in getting noticed. But then you have to work and prove yourself.

Q. Please lay out some tips for current students on preparations for IIT.
Dorjee: Strategy to crack any competitive exam remains same - HARDWORK, there is no substitute to. But then awareness of supporting resources places a major role in success. The students first need to understand the pattern of IIT-JEE. The level of questions they might have to face etc. The question papers are easily available in public domain.

Then comes the real part to study hard. Your preparation will never go waste as it will also help you to crack other entrance examination. I know, I have given nothing new mantra here but the fact remains same so as the mantra.

Q. Also lay out some tips for current students for preparations for life in IITs as getting into an IIT could be a different thing and surviving through it could be different
Dorjee: competition doesn’t stop with the clearing of IIT-JEE. IITs follow relative grading process. So your marks in the subject always depend on how others have performed. Best situation could be when everybody performs the same, all gets the same high grades but this can never happen. You could have some fellow students studying very hard. IITs follow semester system, each semester lasting for approximately four months. Within this span you will have to cover 5-6 theories and 3-4 lab courses. So basically there is no stop from start to end. So that sums up the life after IIT-JEE.

Arunachal Pradesh JEE, Karnataka admission, University BDT College of Engineering Insight from Hage Tawang

In the earlier blog are attached the list of engineering colleges and the streams which are usually on offer through Arunachal Pradesh JEE (http://higher-education-arunachal.blogspot.com/2011/06/arunachal-pradesh-jee-career-guidance.html). So we have a basic idea about the number of colleges and the number of seats in the different streams et.al. Even though you have the list with you, how are you going to make an informed and tactful decision about joining a particular institution? How about the pedagogy of the college, the general environment, availability of hostel facilities, about weather etc.? The answer lies in information. But this information may be hard to get. In order to bridge this gap, the blog will contain information on various aspects from students who have been to these colleges. However, I am not sure about how much of the information contained in the excerpts may be of use to you or how many such colleges will I be able to cover. But this is an honest attempt of trying to provide you with facts and figures via erstwhile and present students in respective colleges so as to give you information you have never had.

Mr. Hage Tawang is one such student. Having completed his XIIth he joined ‘University BDT College of Engineering’ (http://www.ubdtce.com/) in Davangere, Karnataka. Davangere is the city headquarter of davangere district. It is about 256 kms from the state capital Bangalore. According to Wikepedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davangere) the majority language spoken is kannada. Hindi and English are also commonly spoken. Hage Tawang chose Civil Engineering as his choice of course and passed out in the year 2008. He is currently working as a Junior Engineer with the Hydro-Power department of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. He is currently located in Anini.

In order to find some information, the following questions were sent to him which he was kind enough to reply immediately.

Q: Which college did you complete your engineering?
Hage Tawang: University BDT College of Engineering.

Q: Which stream did you pursue?
HT:  Civil Engineering

Q: Which other streams were available through Arunachal JEE?
HT: 4 seats for Mechanical Engg. For civil also, there were 4 seats

Q: How was the learning in your core subject in terms of pedagogy (teachers).
HT: Teachers were very experienced and good in teaching. I liked the pedagogy of my college.

Q: How was your overall learning?
HT: OK

Q: Did your learning in college help you in getting the job you are currently posted in?
HT: YES, definitely.

Q: Did you have hostel facilities?
HT: YES

Q: For girls as well?
HT: YES. But there used to be shortage of seats in hostel for girls. Some of them used to live in rented houses nearby. There were rent houses available near college.

Q: How many girls from Arunachal used to live in rented places?
HT: In all the batches junior to me, girls from Arunachal used to live in rented places.

Q: How was the surrounding area, I mean was the place safe?
HT: The locality was nice and clean. It was a residential area and so pretty safe for girls. But still one must take precautions for personal safety.

Q: How was the overall culture of the college?
HT: The culture and the environment inside the college campus was that of simplicity. Most of the local students were from middleclass and lower middle class background so on average, the attitude of the students was ‘down to earth’. The lecturers too were simple and I reiterate again, very good in teaching. Overall the life in the college will give you the feel of a simple life.

Q: How many people were from Arunachal?
HT: Average 32 (8 seats X 4 year)

Q: How many people were from the Northeast?
HT: Some years back there were students from Meghalaya, Mizoram etc also but later on only students from Arunachal were getting admitted.

Q: How was the food?
HT: Food is one factor in south india which can be a let down for our students but my personal opinion is that in Karnataka the food habits are much better than the other South Indian states. So it was OK.

Q: How is the location of your college i.e., davangere in terms of weather, food and transportation?
HT: In terms of weather it was moderate. Summer was a bit hot but bearable. Almost as same as Itanagar. And winters used to be very pleasant.

We used to mostly eat outside since during that time the Hostel mess was not stable. But it was okay for me.

In terms of transportation we had to reach davangere via banglore. So you take a train or a flight from Guwahati to Bangalore and then take a bus from there. As the buses running from Bangalore to Davangere are available almost round the clock it was not a problem at all.

Q: How were the local people in davangere in terms of
            1.  Helpfulness rate on a scale of 1 to 10
HT: I would rate them 7.
            2. Attitude – rough/gentle/normal
HT: Normal and Gentle.
            3. Language (can they speak hindi or English)
HT: Hindi compared to English..
            4. Friendliness – rate on a scale of 1 to 10
HT: I would rate them 7

Q: How were the college students in terms of
            1. Helpfulness rate on a scale of 1 to 10
HT: I would rate them 7.
            2.  Attitude – rough/gentle/normal
HT: Normal and Gentle.
            3. Language (can they speak hindi or English)
HT: Hindi and English both
            4. Friendliness – rate on a scale of 1 to 10
HT: I would rate them 7

Q: Can you briefly describe the process of admission in your college through APJEE?
HT: The students after getting the nomination paper for colleges in Karnataka from the Higher Education Deptt. can leave for the Karnataka. The students with the guardians have to go to the Higher Education Dept of Karnataka in Bangalore. The college allotments are done there. After that they can go to the respective colleges allotted for admission. P.S- the colleges are not allotted as soon as the candidate reaches there. It has been always observed that the students and guardians are made to wait for some days because of the reasons better known to the education Deptt in Banglore. So sometimes it turns futile when the candidates reaches early hoping for  first come first serve basis. Lots of money and time are wasted with some mental agony and frustration. The issue could be best sorted out if the matter is bought to the notice of the Director, Higher Education Deptt, A.P to talk with their counterpart of that state if it has not been done so far.

Q: Was the admission based on first come first serve basis in Karnataka?
HT: In my case Yes. But can’t guarantee what is the present procedure.

Q: How do you like your job?
HT: I find my job OK

Q: What are your actual responsibilities as in what exactly do you do in office?
HT: Eng works

Q: Overall view of your stream and options after completion of your degree.
HT: For most of our students the reason for opting for civil as a stream is to get back to our own state so in that perspective it is a good option. But the demand for civil is also high outside the state as the development of infrastructure is in a rapid process because of the growing economy of the country. So it is win-win situation especially for the students that are interested in this particular stream.

Arunachal Pradesh JEE, Arunachal JEE, APJEE college rankings

The earlier blog http://higher-education-arunachal.blogspot.com/2011/06/arunachal-pradesh-jee-career-guidance.html, carries the list of colleges which were available through Arunachal Pradesh JEE in 2010. Most of the colleges have been constant on the list for some years now. Hence in my opinion the list might remain   unchanged for Arunachal JEE 2011 as well.

On a periodic basis, different surveys rank colleges and educational institutes across the country. Outlook India is one such magazine which carries out surveys for numerous educational institutions pertaining to different fields. Based on their survey for Engineering and medical colleges I have compiled the list of institutes present in the nationwide rankings which were on offer through Arunachal Pradesh JEE 2010.

For engineering institutes, the following appear in the top 100 engineering colleges in India. So, getting  an admission into one of these institutes would be a pretty good option.

                                                                                                                      All India Rank

Arunachal Pradesh JEE. Career guidance-Engineering-MBBS-BDS

The Arunachal Pradesh Department of Higher and Technical Education must be lauded for adopting to a swift process of announcing results. The Arunachal Pradesh Joint Entrance Exam was held on 31st of May and the results announced a day later on 1st of June 2011. Such a policy must be extolled for it gives very less opportunities of manipulations et al.

Now that the results are out for Arunachal Pradesh JEE, the one thing that you must be searching would be information on streams, colleges etc. Given below are some of the statistics from the official website of directorate of higher education, Arunachal Pradesh.

For Engineering
1.      Total No. of Seats in 2008 : 150
2.      Total No. of Seats in 2009: 155
3.      Total No. of Seats in 2010: 165

There is a trend of increase in number of seats year on year. Hence you could expect a further increase in the total number of engineering seats this year as well. However, if you are wondering if you would get an engineering seat, in my opinion serial number upto 190 in the APJEE (PCM) results should comfortably grab one. The table below is the division of seats according to streams (for 2010)

For Medical Science
1.      Total No. of MBBS seats in 2008: 36
2.      Total No. of MBBS seats in 2009: 40
3.      Total No. of MBBS seats in 2010: 40

4.      Total No. of BDS seats in 2008: 5
5.      Total No. of BDS seats in 2009: 8
6.      Total No. of BDS seats in 2010: 5

7.      Total No. of BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) in 2008: 15
8.      Total No. of BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) in 2009: 1
9.      Total No. of BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) in 2008: 18

10.  Total No. of BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) in 2008: 3
11.  Total No. of BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) in 2009: 2
12.  Total No. of BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) in 2010: 2

For MBBS, the total number of seats might remain at 40, looking at the year on year trend (this is strictly an opinion).

The number of BDS seats should remain around 5 to 8.

For BHMS, the seats should remain at above 15 as the North East Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Vivek Vihar, Itanagar usually offers 15 seats. For BAMS, the seats should be around 2 or 3.

So, in my opinion a serial number in the Arunachal JEE (PCB) upto 40 should comfortably grab an MBBS seat. For BDS, a serial rank upto 45 should be comfortable. For BHMS serial rank upto 63 should grab a seat. For BAMS, a serial rank upto 65 should comfortably land a seat.
